Wig and Hairpiece Buying Guide

Researching as much as possible before you make the commitment to purchase your new wig or hairpiece is of the utmost importance. Let’s face it, hairpieces aren’t cheap, and with so many different styles, colors, and materials as well, choosing one can be a daunting task. So, in this short essay, I’m going to summarize two of the most important factors in buying a hair system, price and material, so that you can go forth with confidence that you are making the right decision.
Let’s start with the materials aspect. What exactly is your hairpiece made of, and what are the different options for materials? Now, technical details about all these different materials and how they are made, plus pros and cons, are beyond the scope of this article. Instead, we will offer a moderately detailed summary so you get a rough idea of what you are dealing with.
Base Materials
The base materials are what actually attach to your head, and there are essentially three types.
1.Mono hair wigs
a.These wigs are made of monofilament, which is a manmade fiber. This fiber is strong, breathable, and appears as a fine netting
2.Lace
a.Exactly what it sounds like. This is the same material made to use lace dresses. It is often handmade, and popular for its realism and light weight.
3.Skin
a.As the name suggests, this base takes on the appearance of your real scalp. It’s made from polyurethane, which is very light, thin, and transparent.

The Hair
For all intents and purposes, there are only two types of hair that are used in hairpieces and wigs; real human hair, and synthetic hair. Generally speaking, real human is hair is the most long-lasting (1-3 years) and realistic looking, but it is also the most expensive, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. However, real human hair toupees can be styled and more easily blended to your natural hair color.
Synthetic hair, on the other hand, is much cheaper, which could be important if you want more than one hairpiece. There are downsides though. Synthetic hair pieces are easily damaged by heat, difficult (not impossible) to style, and cannot be colored. If they are really cheap, they will also have an unnatural shine to them, which could be a giveaway that you are wearing a wig.

So, finally we move on to price. The price scale for men’s hair systems is quite expansive depending on the quality, material, and seller. However, after looking at a few different sites, we can give you a decent estimate of the range of prices.
As we said before, real human hair toupees are going to the most expensive, and it is often recommended that you buy two toupees for variety and also shelf life. Most real human hair toupees, regardless of base, range in price from roughly 240 – 600$.
On the other hand, is synthetic human hair. While this kind does not last nearly as long as real human hair and has all the drawbacks we talked about earlier, it is still a much cheaper option. These wigs range in price from about 60 – 200 dollars.
There is a lot more to the hair system world than just what is in this article. Hopefully though, this has been an informative summary of two of the most important factors you have to keep in mind when buying your hairpiece. Good luck on your journey towards being your best self!
